Overview
BI Connect functionality allows Backstory customers to connect to Backstory as a data source using any BI tool that supports JDBC/ODBC connectors.
When you use BI Connect as a data source, your BI tool creates an extract of the data that you select to access.
What good is data if you can’t use it where you need it? With our new set of connectors, we’re making it easier than ever before to bring insights into context for your teams - wherever they work.
Steps to Connect
Step 1. Enable BI Connect via the BI Connect page in the Backstory Admin Panel.
Step 2. Download the JDBC Driver with AWS SDK (.zip file) from the Amazon Athena User Guide driver via the following link: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/athena/latest/ug/connect-with-jdbc.html
Step 3. Extract the contents of the .zip file and copy the JDBC 4.2 version of the extracted .jar file to the Drivers directory. You might have to create the directory if it doesn't already exist.
Step 4. On the Backstory BI Connect page, generate credentials to access our data source.
Step 5. Navigate to the BI tool of your choice. Time to add our data source! Click on Get data from the source, search and click on Athena connector:
Step 6. In new pop-up input server name, port, and staging directory as formatted below:
Server: AwsRegion=us-east-1;Workgroup=dc_prod_org_{your team id};athena.us-east-1.amazonaws.com
Port: 442
S3 Staging Directory: s3://pai-dc-prod-org-{your team id}/athena-output
Step 7. The connector will then ask for the Access Key and secret that you generated on the Backstory BI Connect page in step 4. Insert your key and click Connect.
Step 8. In the Data source menu, you will be able to choose the tables you need for your analysis. You can drag and drop tables to build visualizations or write custom queries!
Things to Consider
Athena drivers are different for Windows and Mac; follow instructions on Athena user guide to find the right driver
Our BI connect works with all JDBC/ODBC supported tools
After the BI Connect is enabled by an Admin, it takes up to 24 hours for the data to be available.
