The Admin Panel is the central settings hub in Backstory where administrators configure and manage user accounts, data connections, and CRM synchronization. This directory lists every page in the Admin Panel and describes what you can do there, so you can quickly find the right place to get things done.
Note: Accessing and modifying settings in the Admin Panel requires a Backstory administrator account.
Access the Admin Panel
Use these steps to navigate to the Admin Panel from anywhere in People.ai.
Log into People.ai as an administrator.
Click the grid icon in the top left corner.
Select Admin Panel.
Organization
The Organization section contains settings that apply to your entire Backstory instance, including authentication, domain configuration, and API access.
General Settings: Customize how each of your organization's Backstory environments is identified and displayed upon login. Read more >
Domains: View the internal email domains Backstory uses to distinguish employees from external contacts. Read more >
Single Sign On: Configure SAML-based SSO so your team can log in using your existing identity provider (like Okta). Read more >
API Keys: Create and manage API key and secret pairs for programmatic access to Backstory data. Read more >
User Management
The User Management section controls who has access to Backstory, what settings they inherit, and how new users are configured automatically.
Users and Teams: Add, update, and remove users. Manage team hierarchy and roles. Configure user access. Read more >
Configuration Profiles: Create and manage profiles that control CRM sync behavior, permission level, object visibility, and AI features for groups of users. Read more >
User Settings Rules: Define rules that automatically assign the correct settings to new users created through auto-hierarchy. Read more >
Data Analysis
The Data Analysis section allows you to configure data analysis tools, like Backstory Signals and the Backstory Assistant.
Attributes Library: Define filters and attributes used by Signals, such as specifying which accounts or opportunities signals should run on.
Record Selection (Formerly SalesAI Records): Choose which records are enabled for Signals and the Backstory Assistant. Read more >
Assistants: Create and manage Backstory Assistants for use cases like deal qualification or account planning, and assign them to configuration profiles.
Tasks: Set up and manage Signal tasks that surface insights and alerts for your sales team.
CRM Sync
The CRM Sync section controls how Backstory exchanges activity data with your CRM, including what gets synced and what gets excluded.

Push Exclusions (Formerly Local Filters > Push to CRM): Block specific emails, meetings, contacts, or activities from syncing back to your CRM to protect sensitive information. Read more >
Data Ingestion
The Data Ingestion section lets you connect Backstory to the communication and meeting platforms your team uses, and control which participants and events are captured.
Email and Calendar (Formerly Team Access): Connect your email and calendar provider, such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365, to capture activity data.

Participant Exclusions (Formerly Local Filters > Participant): Specify individuals who should never be treated as external participants, so their activity is not incorrectly captured or surfaced.

The Data Export section lets you send Backstory data to external business intelligence and analytics platforms.
BI Connect: Export activity, engagement, and performance data to BI tools such as Tableau or Power BI. Hundreds of pre-configured metrics are available across accounts, opportunities, contacts, and users. Read more >
