Troubleshooting: Email deeplink fails to open the email client

In various places within Backstory, such as Pro-Spector, there are deep links that direct you to your default email client. While this may be an issue your IT team is best-suited to resolve, here are some quick troubleshooting tips you can try first.

Set Default Email Client to Gmail in Chrome on Mac

STEP 1: Set Chrome as your default Mail client on Mac

  • Open Mail on Mac.

  • Navigate to Mail > Preferences > General

  • Set the “Default email reader” to “Google Chrome”

  • Note: You may have to authenticate an account with mac OS to be able to open “Settings”

STEP 2: Register Gmail as the default protocol handler in Chrome

  • Type in your browser address bar: chrome://settings/handlers

  • Remove the handler for email

  • Then, visit Gmail

  • Click “Allow” when asked if you want Gmail to become your default handler for mail

STEP 3: Verify

  • Go to Pro-Spector and click on “Reach Out” on a person's record

  • Verify that this takes you to your work Gmail.

  • If it is taking you to your personal Gmail, follow the instructions here.

Set Outlook as the Default Email Program

  • Open Outlook.

  • On the File tab, choose Options > General

  • Under Start-up options, select the "Make Outlook the default program for Email, Contacts, and calendar" checkbox.

  • Click OK.
