Connect Microsoft Copilot to Backstory

Access your Backstory sales intelligence directly in Copilot.

The Backstory: You are using Copilot to prepare for a customer meeting and you need account details to give Copilot the right context. Rather than switching to Backstory or your CRM to gather that information, you connect Copilot to Backstory using the MCP integration so it can access your data directly. This lets you ask about your accounts and opportunities in plain language and get informed, up-to-date answers without leaving your AI chat.

The Backstory MCP integration connects Microsoft Copilot to your Backstory instance so Copilot can securely access your sales and customer data during conversations. It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), a secure connection method that lets Copilot retrieve account information, communication history, and opportunity insights based on your existing Backstory permissions.

Contact Backstory to Request Enablement

Before creating the MCP connection in Copilot Studio, contact your Customer Success Manager or support@backstory.ai to request enablement of Backstory MCP.

Create a Backstory MCP Connection in Copilot

Prerequisites: To connect Microsoft Copilot to Backstory, you will need a Microsoft Copilot Studio license, an active Backstory account, and Generative Orchestration turned on for your Copilot Studio agent. Generative Orchestration must be enabled before MCP tools become available to configure.

  1. Log into Microsoft Copilot Studio.

  2. Open the Tools page for your agent, select Add a Tool, then select New Tool.

  3. Select Model Context Protocol.

  4. Configure the tool with these details:

  5. Select OAuth 2.0 as the authentication method.

  6. Select Dynamic Discovery as the OAuth 2.0 type.

  7. Click Create.

  8. Click Next to open the Add Tool dialog.

  9. Select Create a New Connection (or choose an existing connection if one already exists), then click Add to Agent to finish attaching the tool.

To test the connection, start a new conversation and ask Copilot about a familiar account, such as "What's the recent activity for [Account Name]?" or "Show me open opportunities for [Account Name]."

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data secure when using this integration?

Yes. Your Backstory data never leaves the secure Backstory environment. Copilot only sends queries, not your actual data. The integration respects your existing Backstory permissions, so you can only access accounts and data you already have permission to view. All communication uses HTTPS/TLS encryption, and OAuth tokens expire periodically requiring re-authentication.

Can I disconnect the integration later?

Yes. Go to Copilot Studio, find the Backstory MCP connection, and remove it. Your Backstory data remains secure and unchanged. You can reconnect at any time by following the setup steps again.

What kind of questions can I ask Copilot about my accounts?

You can ask about account information, recent emails and meetings, open opportunities, deal risks, next steps, and get AI-powered insights. Natural language works best—for example: "Show me high-risk opportunities closing this quarter."

How often do I need to re-authenticate?

OAuth tokens expire periodically for security. When this happens, Copilot will prompt you to log in again. Just click through the authentication flow like you did during initial setup. Most users need to re-authenticate every few weeks to maintain secure access.
