Microsoft Dynamics Integration

Great news! Backstory now supports integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM. This document outlines the steps to connect Backstory to your Microsoft Dynamics instance.

How to Set Up the Integration

Admin Consent Page

As a first step, you'll need to provide Backstory with the domain name of the CRM you're connecting with. It typically looks like https://orgf12345da.crm.dynamics.com. Backstory will then provide you with a unique authorization link that redirects to an "Admin consent" page in Microsoft 365, where you can review the requested permissions.

To proceed, click the Accept button.

Creating a security role

The next step is creating the application user in the CRM.
It’s recommended to have a dedicated security role for the Backstory application user.

To create the security role:

  1. Go to the Power Platform admin center

  2. Select the Environment where the CRM exists

  3. Go to Settings > Security roles and press +New Role

  4. Provide a name for the user

  5. Specify the Business unit, as the CRM we’re creating the role in

  6. Member’s privilege inheritance should be “Direct User (Basic) access level and Team privileges” and every other option should remain as the default

  7. Press the Save button.

Table Permissions

The next step is to configure table-level permissions for the security role. For the People AI Dynamics connector to function correctly, make sure Read Access is selected for the following tables:

  • Systemuser

  • Account

  • Contact

  • Teammember

  • Team

  • Opportunity

  • Opportunitysalesprocess

  • Processstage

  • Connection

  • Connectionrole

  • Transactioncurrency

  • Organization

  • Audit

For proper access to the Audit table, the security role must have the following additional privileges:

  • prvReadRecordAuditHistory

  • prvReadAuditSummary

Once configured, click the Save button at the top of the page.

For more details, please refer to the security roles documentation available here.

Creating the Application User

Finally, you create the application user in the CRM:

  1. In the Power Platform admin center, select the Environment where the CRM exists

  2. Go to Settings > Application users and press +New app user

  3. Select the Application called “Backstory Dynamics Connector”, which should be available in the dropdown once the admin consents

  4. Specify the Business unit, as the CRM you're creating the role in

  5. Choose the security role created in the step above

  6. Press the Save button.
